NOUN Portals has been opened after some weeks inactive

 

 

NOUN portals that has been inactive for few weeks ago has finally opened around 3:30pm this afternoon.
Inactivity of student portal and TMA portal has created phobia in students that make the public went on viral news that NOUN website has been hacked by some crooks while some thought it went under maintenance. after all the news and info from both bonafide and non bonafide of prestigious National Open University of Nigeria, the school site is now been restored.

Students are hereby to register and make printout of their slips that will enable them to sit for second examination in the year 2016 as well as to be extremely careful with their TMAs to avoid poor grading or score. The reason for this is that, some student may like to rush their TMAs because of what happened to portals few weeks back.

Note that portal will be active for students to finish up their TMAs because of what happened. Therefore, do you TMAs very well and utilize the Time and Space provided for TMAs very well and get prepared for the Examinations.

Mum Warns Son Not To Return Home Because He Did Not Bagged First Class At Convenant University

 
So yeserday, a total of 157 students of the Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, on Friday bagged First Class degrees at its 2015/2016 convocation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Ayo, disclosed this during the 11th Convocation Ceremony and Conferment of Honourary Doctorate Degrees, and presentation of prizes in Ota.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 1495 students graduated this academic session.
They comprised 157 first class honours, 708-second class upper honours, 513-second class lower, 118 in third class and 154 post graduate students.
Just before the end of the ceremony in the University chapel, a mother of one of the graduands, stormed out of the hall with some other women trying to pacify her.
An eye witness at the scene sent in this report thus:-

“She was very angry, the other women were trying to pacify her. She was saying ”Upon all the money we spent, all he could finish with was a 2:1, he must not return to the house. I am taking back all the food i brought, imagine, he was supposed to finish with a first class. Those ones that finished with first class, do they have two heads? He must not return home o, he should better just go and eat that result, imagine, all the money we spent from when he started in this school…” the other women tried pacifying her and led her away to avoid a scene as onlookers were already gathering to know what was going on. “

Governor Aminu Tambuwal Increases Youth Corp Members Allowance in His State Sokoto State

 

Sokoto state government has jacked up allowances of Youth Corps members serving in the state. Governor Aminu Tambuwal announced the new policy during the swearing-in ceremony of 2016 Batch A Stream II corps members at the state NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko on Monday June 13th.


“Graduates of medicine will now be paid N50,000 from the current amount of N36,000. Pharmacists will now N25,000 up from the N19,000 obtainable in the past, while graduates of lab science and other medical technicians like nurses are now entitled to monthly stipend of N15,000, up from the current N9,000 they are getting from the state government. In the same vein, graduates of social science and humanities will now be paid N5,000 monthly, a one thousand addition from the previous N4,000 they receive from as state allawee"he said. While urging the youth corps members to reciprocate government gesture by being diligent in their areas of primary assignments, Tambuwal urged them to shun vices that will lead to breakdown of law and order and communal harmony. “I urge you to shun militancy, terrorism and cultism. I also invite you explore Sokoto and study its rich history, culture and people,”He added.

“The Future Belongs to the Thinkers” Dotun Ayeni's Message To Nigerian Schools

My 7-year-old daughter informed me happily a few days ago that her teacher had told her that if the school had an award category for “best thinker” she would get that award for her class. My daughter was of course happy about this and was consoled by the explanation that the school had no category for this type of award.

The available awards are awards for best behaved, super writer, super reader, best student awards and of course early bird- and this my daughter has cleverly informed me means nothing. Nothing? Yes she says. It has nothing to do with your work in class. It’s for those whose parents bring them early to school. Very early. Some of these parents have to be at work very early and fortunately or should I say unfortunately, their children get to grab the early bird award for this feat.

This has got me thinking. I’m not so concerned about the early bird award. My daughter believes it means nothing. I’ve told her it’s a way for the school to instill a culture of punctuality in the children and she should be pleased if she gets one. This is actually beside the point.

I’ve been thinking about why a school won’t have an award category for best thinker. Since the early bird category is a way to instill a culture of punctuality, won’t a best thinker award instill a culture of thinking and great introspection?

What do these children need most as they grow gradually into the world of work?

What has set great men and women apart in times past? What has disrupted the world as we know it today? Why is there so much change everywhere that we struggle to keep up and barely do? There’s so much happening today, changing the way we transact business, the way we work and the way we live.

There’s the internet of things making it easier for manufacturers to understand the end user of their products and their behavior, social media and messaging tools giving a platform to business men and women to sell their goods and meet buyers who may never have known they existed, new and improved technology making it easier for men and women to work from different locations and time zones, technology that can simulate the best classrooms and lab settings in the world.

Were these disruptions made possible by instilling a culture of good behavior, punctuality, good handwriting or even good reading habits?

I don’t think so. This is not to say that the other awards do not have their merit. They surely do. But I am also certain that the future belongs to the thinkers. Those who will not be boxed into a corner and accept things as they are. Those who are bold enough to challenge what’s obtainable and create something unheard off. Something so outrageous that you must be on another level to even conceive it.

People have been doing this. The ones who have changed our world from inception have been the thinkers. People like Isaac Newton, Graham Bell, Martin Luther King and even Edward Deci.

Our educational systems have been built in such a way that the brightest ones with all the awards are at best a reflection of their teachers. Students in universities have learnt to replicate what they see and read, often regurgitating the mind of their lecturers to pass their exams. Will these children ever come into their own in such environments?

There’s been a lot of bold statements recently about successful entrepreneurs without a degree. The danger is not in getting the degree. The danger is how the system prepares children to follow rules, paint within the lines and become a certain kind of person prepared for a certain kind of profession.

The times have changed and it is time we made a change.

This is a message to all our educational institutions. It is time to build a new breed of people starting from their childhood. We must not just tell them about people who have changed the world. We must let them know that they can as well. It starts with opening up the mind, thinking and learning to challenge what they see, hear and know.

The future will belong only to these kind of people. It is time we made a change and I don’t see a better place to start this than in our schools. And maybe starting with an award for best thinker?

Read! JAMB Registrar Explains Why He Supported Scrapping of POST-UME

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde, has made it clear on Tuesday that the board is the only body responsible for carrying out any admission exams.

According to the JAMB Registrar, in an interview monitored by Greennews.ng, Institutions are free to screen candidates but they can not subject candidates to other exams after JAMB. He said: ”Nobody said candidates should not be screened. No more test that is what the government says.

”The first form of screening is the use of their certificates. SSCE, NECO, JAMB and WAEC documents will be checked to see if they meet up with the prerequisites for their course of study. What the government asks them to do right from the beginning is screening,” he stressed.
Speaking on the issue of JAMB registration fee, he said that the registration fee for the UTME is N5,000 and candidates are also to pay N500 to obtain the textbook. The registrar, however, encouraged candidates to be computer literate to enable them to perform well in CBT exams.

It will be recalled that the Public Relations officer of the Nigerian Universities Commission, Ibrahim Yakasai, had earlier announced that the new directive scrapping Post-UTME does not hinder universities from screening students sent to them for admission by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
He said that the usual practice was that during admission, universities, and other schools are allowed to do an elementary screening. The screening includes actual verification of Jamb slip, crosschecking of documents for admission, medical test, age check and a host of another prerequisite for securing of admission.

Questions A Parent Should Ask His/Her Child's Teacher

Looking at the performance of students today, it makes the parent thinks whether the teacher are not doing their job as in to impact knowledge of reading and writing to our children. If parent can the teacher of their children this questions, I think it should help the both teacher and student as well as parent understand their roles.

So here are some questions we encouraged parents to ask teachers and schools to help our students succeed. Keep in mind these are a general set of questions that work regardless of the age and grade. It is also for any governance model of school, meaning it works across traditional public schools, charters schools and private schools. I know the education systems need to improve but I also believe parents should have a full toolkit. Add this to it.

1. What’s my child’s reading level? This is a critical question because many parents think that school grades correspond with reading levels. They often times do not.
   Personally, I go a bit harder on reading because so many of our kids can’t read. Many are multiple years behind reading level yet are getting A’s and B’s in the subject. So asking this question is important. Apply this question to math as well. Know your child’s status, go beyond the letter grade.
   
2. Can we set up a regular time to check-in? This question does something special to everyone involved. For the parent, it empowers you and sets implicit deadlines around student performance. For the teacher, it signifies to them they have an active partner in working with your child. For the child, he or she may act a bit differently knowing pops will be having a conversation with Ms. Johnson on Friday.
   I would suggest pushing to meet with counselors/principals as well at about a 1:3 ratio (i.e. if you meet with a teacher monthly, try to meet with the principal quarterly). If the teacher refuses to meet with you, then I’d strongly suggest a conversation with the principal ASAP.
   
3. What do you see in my child? First off, your kid is a human deserving of love and respect. How can someone truly love and respect your child if they know nothing about your baby? How can someone truly serve your child from a place of love if he or she doesn’t see his or her potential?
   This question opens up a conversation about your child’s humanity. It ensures we start from a place of picturing the best for our children that are often seen as much older and dangerous in the eyes of the world—boys and our girls.
   
4. What’s the goal for this month (or section, quarter, market period, etc.)? This question was critical when I was advocating for students on behalf of their parents.
   One, for many teachers I teamed up with, they were juiced that someone saw and respected the complexity of their work enough to attempt to speak the language. Two, it allowed them to expound on the hopes and goals they have for their students. What it does for you as a parent is allow you to internalize the goals and discuss them at home.
   
5. What is your discipline policy? The numbers are clear that Black boys and girls get suspended at crazy rates. It’s! Crazy! Son! However, broaching the conversation early and often is important so kids acting like kids doesn’t become a liability.
   Implicit bias can send your baby down a tough road that many of our babies don’t recover from. So listen to the policy. Ask questions about the policy. Make yourself available to the teacher and ask the teacher to be available to you because here’s the deal, sometimes, teachers are quick on the draw as they are trying to hold a space not just for your child but for every child in the class. Sometimes your child gets targeted unfairly for a variety of reasons. Sometimes your child may just be off the hook in the moment.
   All of these things may be true, I don’t know and am not claiming to know. However, what I do know is that when a parent and a teacher are working as a team, things can be mitigated much better. There are conversations about what is happening and why.
   
   When there is a relationship, you’re shooting the teacher a text when your son had a rough weekend for reason Y. When there is a relationship, the teacher is letting you know when your child has been acting out of character. It’s a way to create harmony when things are rocky and for most people, there will be rocky times.

Federal Government Scraps POST-UTME

The Federal Government Thursday scrapped the conduct of post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) for candidates seeking admission into higher institution.




This was announced by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu,  on Thursday in Abuja after declaring open the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria.



He said: “As far as I am concerned the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB let them bring it and then we address it.
“If JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admission.”









The Minister also asked the JAMB to stop extra charges on several categories of changes on admissions such as the change of course, change of school and others.
Meanwhile, the JAMB has pegged the cut – off mark for admission for 2016 at 180.
