World record breaking disc jockey, DJ Obi made a stop at the Pulse Nigeria studios, where he talked about his ground-breaking feat and its implications amongst other things.
When asked how he feels about his record feat, he says – “It’s overwhelming, but it’s good, it’s overwhelming because I’m usually just a private person, I like to just do my thing and be quiet about it, but now I have to talk to everybody, I’m still very sleepy, so I’m trying to sleep but at the same time I have to do it, you know, the press rounds and interviews and stuff like that, but it’s great, you know, this is why we did it, this is why we decided to try and break a world record so we could get the name and brand out there.”
The DJ explained he decided to be a DJ to be different “My
purpose is to be different and diverse and it’s easier to do that if
you just sit down and look at the route that everybody follows. There’s a
problem with the Nigerian Entertainment industry but is also a solution
for anyone that’s trying to be different. Nigerian artistes try to be
like the successful ones, they wanna sound like Wiz, they wanna sound
like Flavour, they wanna sound like Davido, they wanna sound like 2face,
the female ones wanna be like a Tiwa, or a Yemi Alade, so no one’s
trying to be different, same thing with the DJs, one DJ releases a music
video, a music track, everybody wants to do the same thing, everybody
forgets that there’s still the basic deejaying to do – bringing the
party to life, breaking new records, if all the DJs are releasing music
videos and music records, who is breaking their records…” The DJ also goes on to explain why he thinks he doesn’t make sense financially for DJs to double up as artistes as well.
On how he prepared
for the record breaking feat, the DJ said there really is no physical
way to prepare for such, that it’s all a mind thing, staying focused,
getting your mind right. “From the day I decided to do it, to me it
was done already, I just needed to actually execute it, and also with
prayers, so as you can see everyone is talking about it as if it’s not
humanly possible, it really isn’t human, God really did help me out, I
prayed and dedicated this thing to God from day one into God’s hands.”
He however
said the only physical preparation he did was going to the gym, eating
right and going to bed earlier than he used to, stating that there was
no use of drugs either medical or recreational.
Obi
revealed when the fatigue started to take a toll on him, how he tried
to hold it together such as when he needed to take a pee badly but still
managed to pull through.
He narrates how he
felt when he actually surpassed the former record, whether he’s been
certified yet and the steps he took to ensure he goes through the
certification process correctly, and the implication of the feat he has
achieved – saying asides the global recognition and elevation he
expects, he hopes that DJs get taken more seriously and recognized more
for their role in the entertainment industry and kids get to aspire to
be DJs in future.
