President Buhari Explain what to do to Oliver Twist Governors

– NUPENG urged the various state
governments to look inwards and look for
ways to generate revenue instead of relying
on bailouts
– Korodo said many governors appoint too
many aides who do nothing than drain the
lean purse of such states
– He advised governors to block all existing
leakages in revenue generation in their states
and stop depending on federal allocations
Governors must now be stopped from relying on bailouts to
pay workers’ salaries, the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and
Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has told the federal
government.

Muhammadu Buhari with governors.
Mr Tokunbo Korodo, NUPENG’s south-west
chairman, while giving the advice in Lagos, urged the
various state governments to look inwards and look for ways
to generate revenue.

He further urged them to get serious and stop relying on
monthly allocations from the federation account.
Many state governors are finding it increasingly difficult to
pay salaries.
Governor Muhammadu Jibrilla of Adamawa state said
recently that governors should not be blamed for their
inability to pay the salaries of workers.

27 states have been finding it difficult to pay the salaries of
their workers in spite of the bailout fund they received from
the federal government. Five other states recently applied
for another round of fund from the federal government.
They received N713.7 billion as bailout funds sometime ago
but President Muhammadu Buhari expressed dismay that
the funds were not judiciously spent.
Some of the governors have however denied wasting the
bailout funds with some of them explaining how they spent
it.
Korodo said many state governors appoint too many aides
who do nothing than drain the lean purse of such states.
If the governors must save cost, they should look inwards,
Korodo said.
“Most of the governors have about 20 commissioners and
over 42 special advisers, besides another large number of
associates from which they have appointed the heads of
various boards and agencies in the state.

“Governors from the 27 states that cannot pay monthly
salaries of their workers should look inwards to find new
ways of making money to settle their wage bills,” Korod said
urging the governors to go into agriculture.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
Korodo advised governors to block all existing leakages in
revenue generation in their states and so they would have
more money.
